“Reflections of the Berkshires“
Bloomingdales x TobeyRenee x JWJ
As a 2024 James Weldon Johnson Art Fellow, I had the unique opportunity to immerse myself in the serene and inspiring environment of the Berkshires. During my residency, I created a series of nine custom mica canvases that capture the essence of this beautiful region.
This collection is deeply inspired by the legacy of James Weldon Johnson, a pioneering figure in the Harlem Renaissance whose work transcended boundaries and celebrated the richness of African American culture. His profound influence on literature, music, and civil rights resonates through each piece, as I sought to channel his spirit of creativity and resilience.
Each piece in this collection is a testament to the interplay of light and nature, reflecting the tranquil landscapes and the rich cultural heritage of the Berkshires. The use of mica, with its natural shimmer and texture, adds a dynamic quality to the canvases, allowing them to change and evolve with the viewer's perspective.
The collection explores themes of **transformation, resilience, and the passage of time**, drawing inspiration from the natural surroundings and the enduring legacy of James Weldon Johnson. Through these works, I aim to evoke a sense of peace and contemplation, inviting viewers to experience the quiet beauty and profound stillness that the Berkshires offer.
Join me at Bloomingdale's to witness the luminous interplay of light and texture in "Reflections of the Berkshires," and to celebrate the enduring spirit of creativity and reflection inspired by James Weldon Johnson.
